Stripe decline codes, explained one by one
Every card decline code below is sourced directly from Stripe's own documentation. We group them by whether Stripe's own guidance points toward automatic retries fixing it, or toward the customer needing to act, and we say so plainly when Stripe's own text doesn't make that clear either way.
Needs the customer to act
expired_card Card's expiration date has passed
lost_card Card reported lost, deactivated by issuer
stolen_card Card reported stolen, deactivated by issuer
incorrect_number Card number doesn't match a real account

incorrect_zip Billing postal code doesn't match
invalid_account Card or its account isn't valid
pickup_card Card restricted, possibly lost/stolen
