What does the Stripe generic_decline code mean?
generic_decline Ambiguous: unknown reason, possibly a fraud blockWhat it means
Stripe's description: "The card was declined for an unknown reason or Stripe Radar or Adaptive Acceptance blocked the payment." This is Stripe's broadest catch-all code, and it explicitly covers two very different situations: an unexplained bank-side decline, or Stripe's own fraud-prevention tools stepping in on your behalf.
Will retries fix it?
It depends which of those two situations you're in, and Stripe's decline code alone doesn't tell you. If it's an unexplained bank decline, the outcome is as unpredictable as do_not_honor. If Stripe's own Radar or Adaptive Acceptance blocked it, retrying the identical payment with the identical risk signals is unlikely to succeed, since the block came from Stripe's own fraud assessment rather than the bank.
What you should do
Check the payment's details in your Stripe Dashboard first, since Stripe does log when Radar or Adaptive Acceptance is the actual cause. If it's a genuine bank-side unknown decline, treat it the way you'd treat do_not_honor: let automatic retries run, then follow up directly if it's still failing.
Where Valkyrie helps: for generic_decline charges that are still unresolved after Stripe's own retry attempts, we send a branded email asking the customer to update their card, the same approach we use for do_not_honor. You're billed 25% only on what we actually bring back.

Questions, answered
Is generic_decline the same as do_not_honor?
They're separate codes, but both cover an unknown reason from Stripe's perspective. The difference is that Stripe's description for generic_decline also explicitly includes the possibility that Stripe's own fraud tools, Radar or Adaptive Acceptance, blocked the payment, which do_not_honor's description doesn't mention.
How do I know if Radar blocked the payment versus the bank declining it?
If Radar or Adaptive Acceptance made the call, you'll typically be able to see that in your Stripe Dashboard's payment details, since Stripe logs its own fraud-tool actions separately from what the card network itself reports.
If Radar blocked it, will retrying work?
Generally not with the same card and details, since Radar's decision was based on risk signals in that specific attempt. A different, legitimate payment attempt from the same customer may well go through without issue.
