What does the Stripe processing_error decline code mean?

processing_error Usually resolved by retrying

What it means

Stripe's description: "An error occurred while processing the card." This is Stripe's label for a technical fault somewhere in the payment pipeline, as opposed to a deliberate decision by the bank to reject the charge. It's a mechanical failure, not a judgment call about the customer or the card.

Will retries fix it?

Usually, and Stripe says so directly. Their recommended next step: "Ask the customer to attempt the payment again. If it still can't be processed, the customer needs to contact their card issuer." Retrying first, escalating second, is literally Stripe's own prescribed order of operations here.

What you should do

Let Smart Retries handle the first pass, since that mirrors exactly what Stripe itself recommends. Reserve customer contact for charges where processing_error keeps recurring well beyond what a one-off glitch would produce, since that pattern falls outside what Stripe's own guidance anticipates.

Where Valkyrie helps: we treat processing_error the same way we treat issuer_not_available, as a decline that genuinely belongs to Smart Retries first. We only follow up on charges that are still failing well after Stripe's own retry attempts should have resolved a simple technical hiccup.

Questions, answered

What causes a processing_error decline?

Stripe's description is deliberately broad: "An error occurred while processing the card." It covers transient technical faults somewhere in the chain between Stripe, the card network, and the issuing bank, rather than a problem with the card itself or the customer's account.

Does Stripe recommend retrying?

Yes, explicitly. Stripe's own next step is "Ask the customer to attempt the payment again," with contacting the card issuer only listed as a fallback if it still can't be processed.

When should I actually worry about this code?

If it's a one-off on a single charge, it's very likely a passing technical fault. If the exact same card keeps producing processing_error on every attempt over an extended period, that's less consistent with a transient error and worth a closer look, since Stripe's documentation doesn't specifically address that pattern.
