What does the Stripe incorrect_cvc decline code mean?
incorrect_cvc Needs the customer to actWhat it means
Stripe's description: "The CVC number is incorrect." The three-digit (or four-digit on Amex) security code printed on the card didn't match what the issuer has on file for that card number. It's a narrower mismatch than incorrect_number: the card itself is real and correctly entered, but the verification code attached to it wasn't.
Will retries fix it?
No. Stripe's recommended next step is for the customer to try again with the correct CVC. This isn't a timing issue or a bank-side hiccup, it's a data-entry mismatch, so repeating the same wrong code produces the same decline.
What you should do
Ask the customer to re-enter their card details, with the CVC specifically called out since that's the field most likely to have been mistyped. If this is happening on a card that previously worked fine for months of recurring billing, it's worth double-checking your messaging is asking them to re-enter the full card rather than just a partial update, since re-typing only some fields can introduce exactly this kind of mismatch.
Where Valkyrie helps: we flag incorrect_cvc as a hard decline that retries won't resolve, and send a branded email prompting the customer to re-enter their card correctly, rather than leaving a straightforward typo to quietly churn the account.

Questions, answered
Why would a saved CVC suddenly be wrong?
Most processors, Stripe included, don't let you store a CVC between charges for security/compliance reasons. So incorrect_cvc on a recurring charge usually isn't about a saved value going stale; it most often shows up when a customer re-enters their card manually, for example after being asked to update their payment method, and mistypes the three or four digit code.
Is invalid_cvc different from incorrect_cvc?
Stripe lists both with the identical description, "The CVC number is incorrect." The public docs don't distinguish a different cause between the two, so treat them the same way.
Can Smart Retries work around this?
No. Stripe's own guidance is for the customer to try again using the correct CVC. There's nothing about timing or amount that changes whether a wrong three-digit code gets accepted.
