What does the Stripe incorrect_zip decline code mean?

incorrect_zip Needs the customer to act

What it means

Stripe's description: "The postal code is incorrect." This is an address verification (AVS) failure, specifically on the zip/postal code field. The card number and other details check out, but the billing zip code submitted doesn't match what the issuing bank has on file for that cardholder.

Will retries fix it?

No. Stripe's own next step is for the customer to try again using the correct billing postal code. This is a data-matching problem between what you submitted and what the bank has on file; it won't resolve by simply waiting and resubmitting the same information.

What you should do

Ask the customer to confirm the billing zip code tied to their card, not necessarily their shipping or current mailing address if those differ. The most common cause is a recent move where the bank record was updated but your stored billing info wasn't, so it's worth explicitly asking them to re-enter their current billing zip rather than assuming the issue is the card itself.

Where Valkyrie helps: incorrect_zip is a hard decline Smart Retries can't resolve on its own. We surface it in your scan and prompt the customer to confirm their current billing details, including the zip code specifically, so the next charge attempt actually matches.

Questions, answered

Why would a billing zip code stop matching?

The most common real-world cause is the customer moved and updated their mailing address with the bank, but your stored billing details still show the old zip code. It can also happen from a simple typo when the card was first entered.

Is this related to incorrect_address?

They're separate decline codes in Stripe's list. incorrect_zip is specifically about the postal code failing address verification (AVS); incorrect_address covers a broader address mismatch. Both point to the same fix: the customer needs to confirm their current billing address.

Does Smart Retries help here?

No. Stripe's recommended next step is for the customer to try again with the correct postal code. It's a data-matching issue, not a timing or funds issue, so retrying without a correction just repeats the decline.
