What does the Stripe invalid_account decline code mean?
invalid_account Needs the customer to actWhat it means
Stripe's description: "The card, or account the card is connected to, is invalid." Unlike incorrect_number or expired_card, this isn't about a typo or a date; it's the bank-side account behind the card that's the problem. Stripe's public docs don't break down the specific underlying reasons, so we're not going to guess at a cause they haven't confirmed.
Will retries fix it?
Unlikely. Stripe's recommended next step is for the customer to contact their card issuer, not simply to retry, which is a strong signal this isn't a timing-related decline that Smart Retries is built to work around.
What you should do
Ask the customer to either check with their bank or, more practically for most people, just try a different card. Since the problem sits with the account behind the card rather than the card number itself, a second card from a different account will usually sidestep the issue entirely.
Where Valkyrie helps: we treat invalid_account as needing direct customer action, since Stripe itself points to contacting the issuer rather than retrying. Our outreach asks the customer to update their payment method, which in practice means supplying a working card.

Questions, answered
What exactly makes an account "invalid"?
Stripe's public documentation doesn't spell out the specific underlying reasons, only that the card or the account it's tied to isn't valid. In practice this tends to cluster around closed accounts, accounts converted to a different product by the bank, or accounts under some kind of restriction, but Stripe doesn't confirm which applies from the decline code alone.
How is this different from new_account_information_available?
Stripe gives both codes the exact same description text: "The card, or account the card is connected to, is invalid." We couldn't find a documented distinction between them, so we're flagging that honestly rather than guessing at one.
Should the customer just try a different card?
Yes. Since Stripe's own guidance is to have the customer contact their card issuer, and the issue is with the account behind the card rather than a typo, the fastest path forward for most customers is usually switching to a different card entirely.
