What does the Stripe restricted_card decline code mean?
restricted_card Needs the customer to actWhat it means
Stripe's description: "The customer can't use this card to make this payment (it's possible it was reported lost or stolen)." This is Stripe's word-for-word description for both restricted_card and pickup_card, so from a merchant's perspective they behave identically; the card has a standing restriction that blocks this payment.
Will retries fix it?
No. Stripe recommends the customer contact their card issuer for more information, not retry the charge, which indicates a persistent restriction rather than a temporary glitch Smart Retries could work around.
What you should do
Ask for a different payment method. Since the restriction sits with this specific card, a new card from the same customer is usually the quickest path back to a working subscription.
Where Valkyrie helps: restricted_card goes into the same bucket as lost_card, stolen_card, and pickup_card in our scans: a hard decline that needs a new card, not a retry. We ask for it directly, and you only pay on what we recover.

Questions, answered
How is restricted_card different from pickup_card?
Stripe's documentation gives both the identical description: the customer can't use the card for this payment, possibly because it was reported lost or stolen. We couldn't find a documented difference in cause between the two, so we're treating them as operationally the same.
Could this be about card type rather than a lost/stolen report?
It's possible, but Stripe's own text for this specific code only mentions the lost-or-stolen possibility. If a card type restriction were the cause, you'd more likely see card_not_supported instead, which is Stripe's dedicated code for that scenario.
What's the fastest fix?
A different card from the customer. Since Stripe's guidance points to contacting the issuer rather than retrying, waiting or resubmitting the same card won't change the outcome.
