What does the Stripe stolen_card decline code mean?
stolen_card Needs the customer to actWhat it means
Stripe's docs describe this plainly: "The payment was declined because the card is reported stolen." The card number itself has been shut off by the issuing bank at the cardholder's request, after they reported it missing under circumstances they classified as theft rather than ordinary loss. For your business, the distinction between lost_card and stolen_card doesn't actually change anything about what happens next.
Will Smart Retries fix it?
No. A card the issuer has deactivated for theft will decline on every attempt, from every merchant, indefinitely. There's no timing window or retry strategy that gets around a card number the bank has turned off.
What you should do
The customer needs to replace the card on file. As with lost_card, Stripe recommends not surfacing the specific "stolen" reason to the customer; present the decline the same way you would a generic one, and ask them to update their payment method. Most customers in this situation already know their card is gone, since reporting a card stolen is usually a deliberate step they took themselves.
Where Valkyrie helps: stolen_card is one of the clean-cut hard declines where outreach, not retrying, is the only path back to the revenue. We flag it in your scan, send a branded email asking for an updated card, and bill 25% only on what actually comes back.

Questions, answered
Is a stolen_card decline a sign of fraud on my end?
Not in the way it might sound. It just means the card itself was reported stolen to the issuing bank, most often weeks or months before your charge attempt. It's not a signal that someone is trying to defraud your specific business right now.
What should I say to the customer?
Stripe's guidance is to present it the same way you would a generic decline, without naming the specific reason. Simply let them know the payment didn't go through and ask them to update their card.
Will this decline resolve itself if I wait?
No. The card is permanently deactivated from the issuer's side. There's no window of time after which it starts working again; the only fix is the customer providing a different card.
