What does the Stripe lost_card decline code mean?

lost_card Needs the customer to act

What it means

Per Stripe's docs, this fires when "the payment was declined because the card is reported lost." At some point the cardholder (or someone with access to their account) told their bank the card was missing, and the bank deactivated that card number outright. The subscription charge is just collateral damage of a security action the customer took somewhere else, usually without connecting it back to your business at all.

A detail worth getting right: don't say "lost" to the customer

Stripe is explicit about this one: "Don't report more detailed information to your customer. Instead, present it in the same manner as generic_decline." That's good advice. Telling a customer their card is flagged lost can read as accusatory, and it's also just unnecessary. All they need to know is that the payment didn't go through and they should update their card.

Will retries fix it?

No, and this is one of the clearer cases. A card reported lost is deactivated by the issuer, full stop. It won't work at any merchant, on any attempt, until the bank issues a replacement card with a new number. Stripe's Smart Retries can't route around a dead card number.

What you should do

Treat this exactly like expired_card from a recovery standpoint: the customer needs to enter a new card. The only difference is in your messaging, since you're working from Stripe's "generic decline" framing rather than naming the specific reason.

Where Valkyrie helps: we classify lost_card as a hard decline that Smart Retries structurally can't resolve, and target it with branded outreach asking the customer to update their card, using the same tactful framing Stripe recommends. You're billed 25% only on what we actually recover.

Questions, answered

Should I tell the customer their card was reported lost?

Stripe's own guidance says no: present it the same way you'd present a generic_decline, without the specific reason. There's no upside to telling a customer their card is flagged as lost, and it can come across as alarming or accusatory for what is, from their side, just a declined payment.

Can retries fix a lost_card decline?

No. The card has been deactivated by the issuer, so it will decline every single time it's used, by anyone, anywhere, until the customer replaces it with a new card number.

How is lost_card different from stolen_card?

They're separate decline codes in Stripe's system reflecting how the cardholder reported the card to their bank, but the practical effect and the right response from a merchant are identical in both cases: the card is dead, and the customer needs a new one.
