What does the Stripe new_account_information_available decline mean?

new_account_information_available Ambiguous: Stripe's docs don't fully specify

What it means, and what's genuinely unclear

This is a case where we'd rather be upfront than confident-sounding and wrong. Stripe's own description for this decline code is: "The card, or account the card is connected to, is invalid." That's the exact same wording Stripe uses for invalid_account. The name of this code implies something about updated account details being available, but Stripe's public decline-codes reference doesn't explain what that means in practice, whether it's visible to you, or whether anything happens automatically. We checked their documentation directly and couldn't find a more specific explanation, so rather than guess, we're flagging it as ambiguous.

Will retries fix it?

Stripe's recommended next step is the same as invalid_account: the customer needs to contact their card issuer. That points away from this being a simple timing issue Smart Retries would resolve.

What you should do

Treat it the same as invalid_account: ask the customer to provide a working card, since that's the one action guaranteed to resolve it regardless of what's actually happening behind the scenes with the old card's account.

Where Valkyrie helps: we classify this as needing direct customer outreach rather than assuming an automatic fix we can't verify. You'll get a branded email prompt asking the customer to update their card, and you're billed 25% only on recoveries that actually land.

Questions, answered

Does this mean Stripe has the customer's new card number?

We can't confirm that from Stripe's public documentation. The code's name suggests updated information exists somewhere, but Stripe's own description for this code is identical to invalid_account: "The card, or account the card is connected to, is invalid." We're not going to claim Stripe automatically has the new details when their docs don't say that.

Should I wait for Stripe to auto-update the card?

We wouldn't recommend relying on that without confirmation. Some card networks support automatic card-updater programs for participating merchants, but Stripe's decline-code documentation doesn't state that this specific code triggers an automatic update on your account. Treat it as a decline that needs a direct fix.

What's the safest next step?

Ask the customer to re-enter their card details directly, the same as you would for invalid_account. It's the one recommendation that works regardless of what's happening on the bank's side.
