What does the Stripe incorrect_number decline code mean?

incorrect_number Needs the customer to act

What it means

Stripe's description is short and literal: "The card number is incorrect." The digits submitted don't match a real, active card account at the issuing bank. For a subscription business this almost always surfaces right at signup, when a customer mistypes a digit while entering their card, rather than appearing out of nowhere on an established, previously-working card.

Will retries fix it?

No. Stripe's recommended next step is specific: "The customer needs to try again using the correct card number." A wrong number is wrong regardless of how many times or when you attempt the charge; there's no timing-based reason this would start succeeding on its own.

What you should do

Ask the customer to re-enter their card details, ideally pointing them straight to a hosted update form rather than asking them to reply with digits over email, which you don't want to receive or handle. Since this typically happens at initial signup rather than deep into a subscription, a prompt, clear message asking them to try again usually resolves it quickly, since the customer is often still actively trying to complete checkout.

Where Valkyrie helps: incorrect_number is a hard decline Smart Retries can't fix, but if the failed signup already created a charge record in your Stripe data, we'll surface it in your scan and can prompt the customer to finish entering their details correctly.

Questions, answered

How does a card number become wrong on a saved subscription?

It's rare for a number to simply change after it was entered correctly. More often, incorrect_number shows up on the very first charge attempt right after checkout, from a typo, a copy-paste error, or a digit transposed while typing on a phone.

Is this the same thing as invalid_number?

Stripe lists invalid_number as a separate decline code with the identical description, "The card number is incorrect." Stripe's public docs don't explain the distinction between the two beyond that; treat them the same way operationally.

Will Smart Retries eventually get this one through?

No. Stripe's own next step is to try again with the correct card number, which only the customer can supply. Retrying an incorrect number just produces the same decline again.
